The benefits are endless when it comes to recreational opportunities. Four seasons of outdoor adventure highlight the quality of life that is experienced in Springerville and Southern Apache County. From skiing, ice fishing, and snowmobile rides, to camping, hunting, hiking, fishing, horseback riding and mountain biking—nowhere can you experience cleaner air and cool summer breezes. Fall brings the sound of elk bugling and the crisp sound of wind swept golden aspen leaves—an outdoor paradise.

Throughout the year, Springerville and its neighbors  "put on their best" for traditional celebrations of the seasons, along with uniquely southwestern events that honor the proud heritage and the pioneer spirit that still lives on in our towns. Combined with museums, libraries, sports fields, swimming pools, equestrian facilities and State Parks, you are never far away from activities. Residents and visitors can golf at three different elevations in Southern Apache County: Alpine, Eagar, and Concho Valley.

An integral part of the communities is the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, home to one of the largest Ponderosa Pine stands in the world. The 2-million acre forest is home to more than 410 species of wildlife. Each year, the 35 lakes, 680 miles of streams, 36 campgrounds, and over 950 miles of trails are visited over 5 million times. 

The Town of Springerville is located in the northeastern portion of Arizona, approximately 18 miles west of the Arizona-New Mexico border, at an elevation of 5,730 feet. Springerville is accessed from the north via Interstate 40 (approximately 90 miles) through our neighbor St. Johns, or from the south through state Highway 60. Springerville is approximately 4 hours from Phoenix through the tall pines and majestic view of the Mogollon Rim, or 4 hours from Flagstaff through the scenic southwestern scenery of the Painted Desert and Navajo Nation.

From Phoenix Along the Mogollon Rim...

Many visitors to Springerville enjoy the scenic view through the Payson, traveling through the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in the world. Starting from Phoenix along State Route 87 to Payson, take State Route 260 along the Mogollon Rim to Show Low. Continue heading east along U.S. 60 to Springerville.

From Phoenix Through the Copper Valley...

An alternative route from Phoenix takes visitors through the communities of Globe and Miami, (the Cobre, or copper valley) where the heart of Arizona's rich copper mining began.

From Flagstaff along Interstate 40, you'll pass through the communities of Winslow and Holbrook, where you can visit Sunset Crater, the Painted Desert, and the new "Standing On the Corner" park in Winslow. Turning south onto Route 191  you'll pass through the Petrified Forest on your way through St. Johns, home to the Apache County Museum, and then on to Springerville.

A strong sense of appreciation and preservation for historical ancestry is evident in this area of the White Mountains. The "Trail of Many Tracks" is an historical driving tour that highlights the prehistoric and historic aspects of the Little Colorado River Plateau and White Mountains of east-central Arizona, in an effort to promote heritage-based tourism. A variety of museums offer a sense of the pioneer spirit and wild west excitement of the area. From the pre-history of archeological sites such as Casa Malpais, Raven Site, and Rattlesnake Ruins, to the historic homes found along tree-lined streets—a sense of historic pride and preservation is recognized.
